SPF stands for sun protection factor. What it does is indicate how long a person can be exposed to the sunscreen when wearing it. In other words how effective it is in keeping someone from getting a sunburn. Getting sunburnt is the biggest threat and problem we have when being exposed to the sun. A certain amount of sun is good for us (our bodies) studies shows that it helps our bodies produce vitamin ‘D’ which is an important vitamin in fighting diseases such as cancer.

Back to our SPF and what exactly does that mean. For example if we were to put on a sunblock or sunscreen with an SPF of 10 we would be protected from the sun for 100 minutes, roughly over an hour and a half.  Research shows normal people can get a sunburn it the dead of heat within 10 minutes. Mind you, this is average and not the case for everybody. This is what they base there SPF on though.

The higher the SPF is the longer you can stay exposed to the sun without getting a sunburn. So it is recommended that parents always use the highest available SPF when preparing there little ones to go out and play in the sun.

Please also use what is called a broad spectrum sunblock or screen as it blocks UVA and UVB rays. All the harmful one. Sun Protection is important – getting burnt by the sun is no fun…and can be dangerous.
